We finally made it! or we at least made a very decent first step towards something bigger. Today, we announce the final integration step of IndexTools into Yahoo! and the re-branding of the IndexTools product. From today on forward our new name is; surprise: Yahoo! Web Analytics. This is exactly 5 months after we closed the acquisition and I think that is a tremendous accomplishment – which actually includes me relocating to New York. :-)

The re-branding also includes the launch of a new website and changes to the analytics product itself. It also includes a few enhancements to the tool, beyond making it scalable and compliant with the Yahoo! stack. From a user perspective, the first most noticeable fact is that we are moving to a single sign-on provided by Yahoo! and your account will be tied into your overall Yahoo! account.

As part of this announcement, we are also opening up further access to the tool and are now actively supporting:

  • Yahoo! Store
  • Yahoo! Developers (Y!OS)
  • Yahoo! Head Advertisers (Microsites)

And for these, this is not just random access as in handing out 15000 logins, but well thought through integration with the platforms themselves. If you e.g. are a Yahoo! store owner you can enable enterprise-class web analytics by simply ticking a box and we then automatically inflate the correct tracking script variables at runtime. You are of course allowed to turn this off and take control yourself if needed. If you are a developer you will probably not even notice that it is us, as we fully instrument on the fly and create reports through the YWA API. All very exciting stuff I will elaborate on in future posts.

As you can read, this is not a free-for-all-come-and-get-it launch, but a carefully planned controlled access launch, which will keep all of our functionality in place and even enhance it. There is no dumbing down of the tool in any of the engagements above - and we will be working hard to add to the list of customers who can get access. So expect the above list to grow rapidly over the course of 2008. Anywho; The official PR message is:

Yahoo! Web Analytics will be released in stages to various business units and eco-system partners!

yeah yeah. – but when can YOU get access? From me, not today, unless you are part of the groups above or one of the groups we are about to engage with in Q4. But stay tuned! If you befriend Yahoo (e.g. become an advertiser) I am most sure you will end up with this tool. There is also a very active partner network, but more about that later though.

For those of you, who are yet to see how the Yahoo! Web Analytics actually looks, find a couple of random screenshots below.
Questions? – write a comment, send me an email, give me a call or come by the Yahoo office in NY and I’ll buy you a Diet Coke to celebrate.

Cheers :-)
Dennis R. Mortensen

Smush it! image optimization

I have had the pleasure of listening to Nicole Sullivan recently about website performance optimization and the impact it has on the bottom line.

I have had the pleasure of listening to Nicole Sullivan recently about website performance optimization and the impact it has on the bottom line. Read her blog.

Nicole and her teammate Stoyan have now released a very cool Firefox extension called smush! it that downloads the images on a webpage, smushes them (ie reduces their file size) and zips them all up. Just upload those optimized images back to your website or Yahoo! Store.

Even if you think that everyone has broadband, the lighter you can make your pages the better. Some of the biggest Yahoo! Stores have very heavy page weights (we are taking in some case megabytes, not kilobytes).

I cannot imagine the increase in business they’ll get if they use this tool to optimize their images. Here is an example of the homepage analysis of an Internet Retailer 500 store:

A web analyst using omniture sitecatalyst is overwhelmed with data, There are some great features which probably makes life easier if your a omniture sitecatalyst user. These features are the ones which are available within the omniture UI

Here’s an overview of all the 7 features, this post covers an intro to all the features. Look out for detailed posts on how these features can be used effectively on daily basis.

Click on the picture for a better view

1.) Omniture Alerts:

Alert Configuration window

Alert Configuration window

As a Web Analyst one is supposed to keep track of the KPI’s and also of course another important metrics.

Omniture alert feature offers exactly the same, it helps you keep a tab on all those KPI on daily, weekly and monthly basis.

When you setup alerts, you can configure SiteCatalyst to check your Web site statistics at the end of each day, week, or month. If your metric reaches a high or low value that you set, or if it changes by a certain percentage (either up or down) then Site Catalyst sends you an alert.

2.) Omniture Targets

Setting Targets feature in omniture is great!, it helps you measure your performance against benchmark. Target is very helpful for marketing campaign effectiveness,

When you set up targets for all your KPI’s sitecatalyst shows both the actual and your target giving you a single graph overiew of your perfromance.

3.) Omniture Bookmarks

Bookmarks are like shortcuts to your reports, very helpful when you create custom reports using calculated metrics.

4.) Omniture Data Extract tool

One of the best tool, helps defining your own “X” and “Y” axis and configure the report the way you want it. You can filter as per your requirements. This tool let’s you schedule as per your requirement.

5.) Omniture filtering ( reports data)

The Filter is of great help if your site has large number of pages, it seamlessly helps you to filter “the data you need”. In the advanced filter section you can use operators to look for that one page or that one section of your site.

6.) Omniture Ranked and Trended View.

Omniture sitecatalyst allows reports to be viewed in two formats, ranked and trended. Trended view feature is great and must use for a web analyst to get a holistic picture of the report.

7.) Omniture Calculated Metrics

Calculated metrics is of course one of the leading features of ominture sitecatalyst, this feature helps you create custom metrics according to one’s business needs. This indeed is one of the feature a web analyst uses or needs to use on a daily basis.

P.S: All the above screenshots are from SiteCatalyst version 14.0

Ok! so that’s about it for now, am i missing something ?  So what’s you favourtie features in sitecatalyst? Feel free to addon via comments

pExciting times in the world of web analytics after the announcement of a href=”http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=303872″Yahoo!’s purchase of Index Tools/a and the subsequent news that a href=”http://visualrevenue.com/blog/2008/04/indextools-yahoo-web-analytics-goes.html”Index Tools would be offered for free/a. It remains to be seen what the Yahoo! version of Index Tools will look like, but I am amazed as the pace of innovation and consolidation going on./p

pOne group of people to benefit are Yahoo! Store merchants. As mentioned on the Yahoo! Store blog, we can expect a href=”http://ystoreblog.com/blog/2008/04/better-insights-into-your-traffic-and-conversion-rates/”Index Tools to be incorporated into the Yahoo! Store/a platform. Again, it remains to be seen how the tool will be rolled out, but it should be possible to push out the tracking code to all merchants automatically. strongIn one go, have 100% adoption/strong. That’s pretty amazing and will certainly raise the level of awareness of web analytics among merchants. In and of itself that does not mean that merchants will stronguse/strong web analytics reports, but you have to start with a solid tool as a foundation./p

pI am very excited at the prospect of continuing to help merchants use all these cool web analytics tools!/p

pCheers,br /

Top 10 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started in Web Analytics #2

Continuing our Things I Wish I Knew… series, Alex Cohen offers his Top 10:

  1. You are Not the First Web Analyst - You do not need to invent web analytics. Somebody has encountered the problem you have. Establish a great base of knowledge by buying books like Web Analytics: An Hour A Day, joining the Yahoo Web Analytics Forum and subscribing to every measurement blog you can find.
  2. Go to Emetrics NOW - Your world view is likely to be very myopic: all about your tool, your website, your business. You need perspective. The eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit will open your eyes, especially if you’re just starting.
  3. Your Tool Can Do More Than You Think - Most people assume that what you get out of the box is the limit of your tool. This is usually wrong 99% of the time. You must not be afraid to ask your vendor about what else it can do.
  4. Start a Blog or Business - If you don’t really, really own the numbers you’re responsible for, you’ll never really, really learn the data. Pick some side project, a blog or a business, and measure the hell out of it. Trust me, you will learn a ton.
  5. Automate Your Life - I’m repeating June here, but you simply must automate as much as possible. You will be stuck in Excel hell unless you can use technology better.
  6. Test! Survey! - Repeat after me: not everything you need to know is inside of your conventional web analytics tool. Say it again. Now, do it. There is NO excuse not to start gaining experience. If you listened to #4, then you don’t need anyone’s permission.
  7. Learn Other Disciplines (like SEO and Paid Search) - You will be better at your job if you understand what you’re measuring. Start dabbling in paid search, SEO, affiliates, email, WHATEVER. Just stop focusing on measuring and start focusing on doing the things you measure.
  8. Communication is the #1 Skill You Need - Measurement without action is failure. If you cannot communicate your findings and persuade people to act, you will not be effective. Learn to present. Master the executive summary. Be one with PowerPoint.
  9. Be Not Afraid of Technological Terms - I’m not a technically oriented person. But, the very nature of internet marketing requires that you at least grasp the basics. The nature of web measurement requires that you grasp a step above the basics. Like it or not, you need to tackle this sooner rather than later.
  10. Teach Early and Often - It is very easy for people to start relying on you to measure. Unfortunately, this can quickly become limiting to your career growth. Measure for manager and he’ll optimize for a day, teach him to measure and he’ll optimize for life!
